Bora Bora island is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Society Islands in French Polynesia, and probably in the world. Only 165 miles (264 kilometers) northwest of Tahiti, it is completely encircled by a coral reef, except for one narrow passage. This reef protection makes the translucent lagoon almost completely calm. Therefore, it is easily accessible to swimmers, snorkelers, and divers. The myriad of blue and green colors in the lagoon are indescribable. I worry that the island's small size (only 38 square kilometers) and overbuilding may soon tinge its overall beauty for many visitors.
