Saigon - Street Scenes from Saigon, Vietnam (officially Ho Chi Minh City)

Evolving City Is Filled with People and Motorbikes

By , About.com Guide

Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 1975 after North Vietnam took over South Vietnam. However, all of our tour guides and many of the people we came in contact with still refer to the city as Saigon, a name the city had for over 200 years.

The streets of Saigon are busy and continually gridlocked with millions of motorbikes. I'll never complain about the "crazy" drivers in Atlanta again!

These photos were taken while the Crystal Symphony was docked in Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon for two days while on a southeast Asia cruise from Hong Kong to Singapore. We did a city tour of Saigon the first day, and a "Memories of War" tour the second day that included time spent at the famous Cu Chi Tunnels and the War Remnants Museum. I thought the creative way the Vietnamese use motorbikes to carry everything from balloons to flowers to parcels was fascinating and great material for photographs.
