Entrance to the walled Recoleta cemetery (open 7 am to 6 pm daily) is through marvelous ominous gates, and the 13 acres are the final home to more than 6,400 Argentines buried in elaborate (even ostentatious) tombs and mausoleums. This cemetery is definitely a "must see" in Buenos Aires. Eva Peron is buried in La Recoleta, as are many of Argentina's other rich and famous citizens such as Sarmiento. The surnames on the tombs are familiar to all Argentines.

You will need a map of the cemetery or a guide to find Eva Peron's tomb. Or, if it is a busy day, you can just follow the crowds. Her tomb is on the far left side of the cemetery on a small side "street" in the necropolis. Compared to most of the mausoleums, the Duarte tomb is simple and unassuming. Only the many plaques honoring Eva Duarte Peron make the tomb stand out.

We found the artwork on the mausoleums impressive and loved wandering the narrow passageways separating the tombs. The cemetery is home to several feral cats, and we saw a local woman feeding them freshly ground hamburger. No wonder they make Recoleta Cemetery their home.
