Puerto Madero is the newest barrio of Buenos Aires. It was originally an old port, with rundown brick warehouses and old grain mills. The city has revitalized the area, and today there is a scenic riverside promenade flanked by chic offices, apartments, hotels, restaurants, and clubs. Buenos Aires made Puerto Madero its 47th barrio in August 1998 in recognition of the significant changes in the area. We didn't get to spend much time in Puerto Madero, but it is definitely worth another visit. The views of the city across the river were spectacular.
The last barrio of Buenos Aires we visited was La Recoleta. This elegant part of Buenos Aires is filled with parks and fashionable shops and residences. La Recoleta also has many sidewalk cafes and bars, and people-watching seemed to be a popular activity. As noted on page 4, the Recoleta artisans' market on Sunday afternoon is a great place to shop for gifts and bargains. Although Recoleta is one of the poshest barrios of Buenos Aires, it may be most famous for its cemetery.
