I sailed north on the Silver Spirit from Santiago (Valparaiso) to Acapulco, and the cruise director, Fernando de Oliveira, dressed up as King Neptune for a traditional equator-crossing ceremony. It was great fun for all as the pollywogs, those who had never crossed the equator on a ship, were transformed into shellbacks. Each cruise ship seems to have a slightly different ceremony. On the Silver Spirit, the pollywogs were required to kiss a raw fish, and the women then immediately kissed the captain, who certainly demonstrated his good spirits by cooperating.
Everyone on the voyage, including those of us who were already shellbacks, received a certificate celebrating our crossing and signed by the Captain, Hotel Director, and Cruise Director. Another thing to love about cruising!
