The Cathedral of the Archangel was the burial place of the Czars until 1712 when the capital was moved to St. Petersburg. Forty-six tombs are found in this cathedral, including those of Ivan the Terrible and his young son Dmitry.

The walls the pillars of the Cathedral of the Archangel are covered in frescoes that tell the story of Russian history. The frescoes have been repainted several times. The iconostasis is 43 feet high and dates back to the 19th century. Although the icon of the Archangel Michael is from the 14th century, most of the other icons in the cathedral are from the 17th century.
