The Nobel Museum, which is located on Storatorget in the center of Gamla Stan, was opened in 2001 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize. The portraits and prize citation of all the 700-plus winners hang in random order from the ceiling of the museum and move along a unique cableway around the room. I thought it was a very creative way to present the winners. The museum is located in a lovely 18th century building, and has many films about the prize winners and the prize ceremonies.

When Alfred Nobel died in 1896, his will gave a prize for physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace. When Norway was granted its independence from Sweden in 1905, the Nobel Peace Prize moved to Oslo, but all the other awards are presented in Stockholm at the City Hall.

The Nobel Museum is open in the summer most days from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, but stays open until 8:00 pm on Tuesdays.
