Tallinn, Estonia - Baltic Cruise Port of Call

By , About.com Guide

Tallinn is a wonderfully preserved medieval city on the Baltic Sea. Cruise ships sailing to St. Petersburg often stopover in Tallinn because it has Old World ambience and friendly residents. Estonia was part of the old Soviet Union until 1991, and its capital Tallinn has changed a lot since then. The city still has a Russian flavor mixed with touches of Scandinavia and the West.

Estonia also has lower prices than some of the rest of the Baltic cities, evidenced by the many day trippers streaming off the ferries from Helsinki to spend the day shopping in Tallinn. If your Baltic cruise includes a day in Tallinn, you might want to take an organized tour of the city. However, the old town is just a short walk from the pier, and the city can be explored easily on your own. We found that many of the residents spoke excellent English.
