Our second day of fishing we had an earlier pick up time since we were riding via van to the Bay of Dreams. We rode with 6 other "fishermen"--a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 teens from Colorado) and 2 men from Oregon. They had all been to Baja several times. We rode in the van about an hour or so south of La Paz to the fishing area.
We boarded our Pangas (not super pangas since they didn't have canvas covers and were smaller) and rode only about 10 minutes to the fishing area. Our guide was much younger, still spoke English only slightly better than we spoke Spanish (not at all except for fishing terms like bait, reel, etc.). His name was Adolfo, but he went by Dolfo. This time there were about 30 pangas (no yachts), trolling for the yellowtail or what ever other fish there were to catch.
There were some huge houses on the cliffs overlooking the sea--one even had its own helicopter. I guess you need one out in the middle of nowhere. We were fishing near the shore, and had a wonderful bird show all day long. The pelicans and other sea birds swooped down taking bait the guides threw out for chum. There were so many boats, our guide got out his cast net and caught his own bait rather than wait for one of the bait boats to catch it. (Ronnie gave him the $20 for the bait). I immediately hooked a yellowtail (we guessed from the way it was fighting), but it broke my line about the time I was pooped and ready to pass the rod to Ronnie. We hooked a few others, but never landed anything except a small trumpet fish (Ronnie got it). We came in about 1:00 pm, and found that the other 3 boats from our van all got at least one fish. I sure was glad we got the good one on first day of fishing!
