Spectacular Canyon Is Highlight of El Chepe Train

By , About.com Guide

The rugged Copper Canyon is almost 6,000 feet deep in some places, and the canyon is colored in greens, reds, and browns. The famed Chihuahua and Pacific railroad, fondly known as El Chepe, provides a marvelous means of reaching Copper Canyon from Los Mochis, which is near Topolobampo on the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortes). Cruise ships often dock at Topolobampo and passengers take an 18-hour shore excursion to Copper Canyon.

El Chepe climbs almost 7000 feet from Los Mochis to the summit near Barrancas. Those who love hiking or horseback riding might prefer a land-based vacation that allows longer time in this remote canyon, but just the thrill of riding the classic El Chepe for a day is well worth the expense, especially for train enthusiasts. Copper Canyon is a network of canyons spread over a huge area. The canyon is much younger, narrower, and greener than the Grand Canyon. Both canyons are very special, yet quite different.

These photos of Copper Canyon demonstrate some of the beauty seen from the rim of the canyon rim at Barrancas.
