We spent a memorable day with gray whales while on our Sea of Cortez cruise on the American Safari Cruises' Safari Quest. Our hearty group of 16 travelers boarded a bus early in the morning from the dock in Loreto. We had a beautiful drive across the mountains and the Baja Peninsula to Adolfo Lopez Mateos on Magdalena Bay of the Pacific Ocean. The lagoon at Magdalena Bay is a favorite birthing area for gray whales, and many make the journey to Mexico in the winter months.
We were in Mexico in late March, which is near the end of the whale watching season at Magdalena Bay. Even the "babies" were larger than our small boats! We were extremely lucky, because the babies were very inquisitive about our boats, and they kept coming up all around us, wanting to be petted and gently bumping the boats. We all agreed it seemed as much fun for the whales as for us! Pairs of mamas and their young would continually seek out the boats and would roll, blow, and dive all around us. What a show!
