We thoroughly enjoyed browsing in the shops and seeing the delightful mix of stonework, sun, and shadows in the town. Most of the shops are definitely geared towards tourism, with the expected mix of arts and crafts, antiques, jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs. We had visited the French hilltop village of Eze several years ago, and St-Paul-de-Vence looked much like Eze, only it had views of the countryside rather than the French Riviera.
After walking the length of St-Paul-de-Vence, our small group walked up a steep hill through a lovely forest to the Foundation Maeght. It was like walking through a time warp! The main building is very modern and striking, and the wooded, grassy setting was very different from the sun-drenched village of St-Paul-de-Vence below. The grounds of Foundation Maecht were beautiful, filled with interesting outdoor sculpture and wonderful hilltop views of the surrounding countryside. The artwork inside the museum included paintings, mosaics, and sculpture. The stained glass windows in the small chapel next door to the main building should not be missed.
