Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) Guard at the Tower of London

By , About.com Guide

The yeoman warders guard the Tower of London and offer witty tours of the site. They got the nickname "beefeaters" when they were paid in rations of beef.

The yeoman warders give free, one-hour tours of the Tower of London starting every 30 minutes from just inside the gate. The yeoman warders, also called "beefeaters" because they were once paid in rations of beef, are witty and entertaining. Some of their descriptions of the history can be a little grizzly and bloody, but that's the way it was! The tour is a definite "do not miss" when you go to the Tower of London.
