We drove over the mountains while the guide told us much about the region. Unfortunately, although there were no clouds, the early morning fog obscured much of the 2-hour drive to our first stop in Amalfi. Our guide gave us free time to explore the small town before we drove onto Positano. The fog lifted, and we finally got to see why this area is so famous! Despite its very steep streets, I loved Positano, and walking down to the beach and wandering into some of the boutiques was a fun way to spend an hour before lunch. After our spectacular lunch in Istanbul at the Ciragan Palace during our previous Princess Elite tour, I had high expectations of the Positano restaurant, and was not disappointed. We ate lunch high on the cliff overlooking the sea at one of the few 5-star hotels in Positano, Le Sirenuse. This classic hotel served us a terrific lunch in a marvelous setting.
After lunch, we were off to our final stop, Sorrento. We had free time to shop and explore this famous Italian town before heading back to Naples.
Costing about $300 per person, this excursion is expensive, but other than the morning fog, a perfect introduction to the Amalfi coast of Italy.
