Rousse (also spelled Russe or Ruse) is the fifth largest city in Bulgaria and the largest river port in the country. Rousse is best-known for its 19th- and 20th-century Neo-Baroque and Neo-Rococo architecture. The city has a lovely downtown pedestrian area, which is filled with people enjoying the music, flowers, and fountains in the summer evenings.
River ships sailing on the Danube River might include a stopover in Rousse since it provides easy access to Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanasi. The Viking Neptune overnighted in Rousse on our eastern European Danube River cruise. Passengers could easily walk from the city into town, and the buildings and parks were softly lit and lovely. We stopped in at the Danube River Hotel and enjoyed a drink in their outdoor garden. The hotel, which is located right downtown on the main square, also had a live band. The evening was warm, the music was entertaining, and the beer was cold. What a nice night on the Danube!
