Durnstein is a small baroque village on the Wachau Valley of the Danube River in Austria. This 19-mile (30 km) valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. European river ships sailing the Danube River sometimes stopover in Durnstein in order for their guests to make the arduous hike up the hill to the ruins of the Durnstein Castle where Richard the Lionheart was held captive in 1192-1193, tour the Domane Wachua cooperative winery, or just explore the small village.
Whatever you do in Durnstein, I'm sure you will love this quaint place on the Danube. Be sure to try some of the apricot jam, white wines, or the potato hand lotion. All make great gifts or souvenirs.
