River cruise ships sailing on the Danube River often stop in the small town of Donji Milanovac for customs clearance into Serbia. We docked in Donji Milanovac for just that reason when sailing on the Viking River Cruises' Viking Neptune. Our ship passed through the Iron Gates of the Danube in the early morning, and we were docked in Donji Milanovac before 8:30 am. Passengers had about two hours to walk around the small village, and we were all impressed with the cleanliness of the town and the marvelous flowers. The homes had very small yards, but each was filled with flowers all growing lustily in the rich fertile soil.
Donji Milanovac is a very old town, and originally was built on an island in the Danube River. The village was moved ashore in 1830 to avoid the frequent flooding. It was moved again, along with dozens of other villages, when the dam was built on the Danube River at the head of the Iron Gates in 1970. We all enjoyed wandering the streets and exploring the small stores.
