Passengers on Cruise West Columbia and Snake River cruises embark and disembark in Portland, Oregon, which is on both the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Cruise West used the Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Portland as a meeting point for our cruise, and we had a Sunday afternoon in downtown Portland to explore the city. With its many bridges and gorgeous gardens, Portland has well-earned its nicknames as the city of bridges and city of roses.
Our ship the Cruise West Spirit of Discovery was docked on the Columbia River in nearby Vancouver, Washington. After boarding the ship in the late afternoon, the Captain took the ship down the Columbia River to the junction with the Willamette River. We sailed a ways up the Willamette, enjoying the late afternoon sunshine and the wonderful views of Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. Soon, the Captain turned the ship around and we headed up the Columbia River, ready to start our river adventure.
