Day trips from Cape Town to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, often include a couple of hours at Hout Bay on the western side of the Cape Peninsula. The drive along the coastline is spectacular, and while in Hout Bay, visitors can take a boat ride into Hout Bay to see Duiker Island, which is home to a colony of about 3000 Cape fur seals.
The ride to the island passes by the Sentinel, a very large rock outcropping that overlooks Hout Bay. Thousands of birds, including Bank Cormorants, which are large black diving birds, also are seen on Duiker Island, as are many other types of sea birds.
