Cape Town offers a variety of outdoor activities for active thrill seekers, and the spectacular Cape Town beaches attract surfers, windsurfers, and kite boarding. All beaches in South Africa are public and many are very crowded on weekends. Of course, sun bathers and swimmers also enjoy the beaches, but the cold water keeps most of those without wet suits on the beach until they are hot enough to briefly plunge into the cold Atlantic.
If you are visiting Cape Town, a scenic beach road heads south from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront area. We rode the hop on-hop off bus around the city, and the circular route follows the beach road north on the way from Table Mountain back to the waterfront.
Popular Clifton Bay has four beautiful beaches with numerical names: 4th is for families, 3rd is for body-building gays, 2nd is for straight couples and gays, and 1st is mostly for locals.
Other picturesque beaches near Cape Town include those at Camps Bay, Llandudno, Hout Bay and Boulders Beach.
