Tracy Arm Fjord in Alaska

Spectacular Fjord Ends at Sawyer Glaciers

By

Tracy Arm is southeast of Juneau on the Inside Passage. This glacial valley is a beautiful place to cruise, and the Sawyer Glaciers at the end of the fjord are extraordinarily blue and beautiful. The south Sawyer Glacier is quite active and famous for its calving of icebergs.

Tracy Arm is about 23 miles long, and small cruise ships often wind their way through the narrow waterway to the face of the glacier. Larger ships only go part way into Tracy Arm, but cruise passengers still get a look at Sumdum Glacier, some spectacular scenery, and the ambiance of a luxury ship.

Icebergs from the Sawyer Glacier float far out into the waters of Tracy Arm. Nearing Sawyer Glacier, the water filled with small ice bergs and reminded me a little of iceberg alley in Antarctica. We only saw a few small pieces of the Sawyer Glacier calve. Lucky for us, we did see the LeConte Glacier near Petersburg calve on another day in Alaska.
