Maybe it was just the unknown, the small boat, or the icy chill in the air, but we thought LeConte Glacier Bay near Petersburg and Wrangell, Alaska was the best location for icebergs and harbor seals on our Inside Passage cruise. The Spirit of Yorktown had traveled to Glacier Bay and Tracy Arm, but the LeConte Glacier was the most active during our visit, and the icy-blue icebergs were massive--the largest I've seen since Antarctica.
While in Petersburg, we booked a shore excursion through Cruise West for a jet boat tour to LeConte with Breakaway Adventures. We boarded the 18-passenger small covered boat and rode up into LeConte Bay. It was amazing -- large icebergs, growlers, and bergie bits covered the bay, and the boat dodged and wove through the icy waters on its way to the base of the LeConte Glacier, one of the most active in Alaska. We even saw the glacier calve, but I didn't get a photo! Hundreds of harbor seals sunned themselves on the ice, adding to the marvelous adventure.
