The Great Hypostyle Hall is too big to capture in a picture. The 134 papyrus-shaped stone pillars cover over 6000 square meters--larger than St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome and St. Paul's Cathedral in London combined. It is believed that the pillars were originally brightly painted, but today only the carvings remain due to the annual flooding of the Nile which was not curtailed until this century.
