The Tala Private Game Reserve is hidden in the KwaZulu-Natal hills north of Durban. Much of the 7500-acre game ranch is covered with acacia trees and grassy open fields where the African wildlife feed. Seeing wild animals like rhinoceros, zebra, and ostrich grazing much like cows do at home is very disconcerting at first and almost a little too easy.
Cruise ships docking in Durban like the Silversea Silver Wind offer day safaris to Tala, and guests board 10-passenger 4x4 vehicles for viewing. We saw more diverse species at Tala compared to the other game reserves and wildlife parks we visited, (Addo Elephant National Park, St. Lucia Wetlands Park, and Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve) but this smaller private park almost seemed to have too many animals. With all the animals so close and grazing, it was more like a ranch than a park. However, seeing the variety and numbers of wild animals was fascinating.
