Luxor - Gateway to Temples and Tombs
Luxor Is Filled with More than Ancient Archaeological Sites

From Linda Garrison, About.com

Luxor is built on the site of the ancient city of Thebes, and sits on the Nile River an hour's flight south of Cairo. Luxor has been a tourist favorite since the European archaeologists of the 19th and early 20th century began publicizing the amazing tombs and temples of the city.

Passengers from the Silversea Silver Whisper had an overnight in Luxor at the Sonesta St. George Hotel, traveling the 3 hours from Safaga on the Red Sea via coach. We visited Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple the first day, and then returned to Karnak for the light and music show that evening. Our second day was spent on the West Bank of the Nile in the Valley of the Kings and Medinat Habu.

After spending just two days in Luxor, I could see why is it so popular with tourists. Over 300 riverboats cruise the Nile each year, so cruise lovers have two options for seeing Luxor--excursions from Red Sea ports or on a Nile River cruise. These dozen pictures are some miscellaneous sights from around Luxor.
