In addition to the swimming pools and lounge areas, the observation deck (deck 11) has a sports center with basketball/volleyball court.
One nice outdoor area on the Nieuw Amsterdam is the Cabana Club, a private area with small cabanas overlooking either the Lido pool or the ocean. These cabanas are ideal for those who love to sit outside and want more space than a cabin balcony provides. Those renting a cabana (either by the day or the whole cruise) get some of the best views of the pool and the ocean, along with extra amenities.
The Nieuw Amsterdam has a wrap-around promenade on deck 3. This teak walking deck is covered and it's only three laps to the mile! Tradional teak deck chairs line much of the promenade deck, and many guests prefer to sit outdoors there rather than by the pool. It's quieter and always shady.
