Dolphin Watching on Moorea
<<< Previous Picture Next Picture>>>
The South Pacific is the home of the spinner dolphins. These are
smaller than the dolphins we see in the Atlantic, and are named for the
gymnastic spins and turns they do in mid-air. We went with a naturalist on
a small boat to look for dolphins. They usually stay near the reef
passages in the daytime, and go out to sea at night to hunt for food.
Dolphins are found in the South Seas year-round, but the whales only visit
French Polynesia in the June-September time frame. Unfortunately, I
didn't get any pictures of them spinning--they were too fast for me!
