Our second day on Raiatea we took a Renaissance R3 shore excursion that included a ride on an outrigger canoe along the eastern shore of the island and up the Faaroa River.  The morning was delightful with sun and a cool breeze flowing through the covered canoe.  We skimmed along the lagoon watching the waves pound the reef.  There were many small thatched roof huts straddling the lagoon waters.  Some of the huts were for working pearl farms, others were for coddling rich tourists willing to pay hundreds of dollars a night to sleep over the water with a "window" in the floor.

The river was slow, and heavy vegetation covered the banks.  The guide was quick to point out  that we could not expect to see any wild animals since Raiatea does not have any!
