As our luxury cruise ship the Silversea Silver Shadow sailed towards
Santorini, we all got up early to see the the sun rise over the spectacular volcanic Greek island.
Cruise ships anchor in the ancient caldera of the volcano. I made this photo of
the Silversea Silver Shadow anchored below the city of Fira on Santorini while
on a ship's tender ashore. To access Santorini via cruise ship you either have
to take a short tender ride to the supply dock and ride a bus up the mountain to the
top of the island, or take a tender to the base of the island directly below
Fira and then take a cable car, donkey, or walk to the summit. It may not seem
easy to see Santorini, but it's worth it! Since we were meeting a bus for a
shore excursion, we took the
tender to the supply dock, toured the island, and ended up in Fira for a late
lunch and some shopping. We
opted for the cable car down!
