Panama - Panama Canal - Turkish Coal Freighter - Boarding the Bulkizmir

We boarded our freighter for the transit through the Panama Canal in Lake
Gatun after the ship had come through the Gatun Locks. Our pilot boat
pulled up alongside the Bulkizmir, and a "Jacob's ladder" was lowered
over the side. While both boats were still moving, we jumped and caught
hold of the ladder and scampered up onto the deck. The crew was hysterical
with laughter. We were hysterical with fear! After all, the lake was
choppy, and if you fell when leaping to the ladder, you would be smashed between
the ship and the pilot boat. The second photo was taken from the bridge of the Bulkizmir. We
picked up an additional pilot before we transited the Pedro Miguel locks.
This picture gives you an idea of the speed the two boats were maintaining
during the transfers. Photos by: Linda Garrison Back to Panama Cruises Photo
