Netherlands - Amsterdam to Volendam on the Viking Europe
The Viking Europe sailed from Amsterdam in the late afternoon after an enjoyable day touring the city and the Floriade. We sailed north towards Volendam, a former fishing port that is now a real tourist mecca. Volendam is only about 20-25 km north of Amsterdam, so we arrived there after sailing through a lock and along the Gouwzee Bay. It was a wonderful dinner cruise on our first night on the ship away from Amsterdam. Volendam is charming from afar with its quaint shops and picturesque ships. However, a closer look finds that most of the shops are selling souvenirs and other touristy items. In the summer Volendam's proximity to Amsterdam makes it an ideal day trip, but this same proximity means that you will find LOTS of other tourists cramming the shops and village streets. We arrived in Volendam after dinner and left early the next morning. We were entertained in the evening by a group of Dutch folklore dancers.
