Netherlands - Sailing to Volendam from Amsterdam

< <  Previous Netherlands Picture        Next Netherlands Picture > >

After an enjoyable day at the Floriade, the Viking Europe left Amsterdam to sail to Volendam and spend the night. We sailed from our berth at the cruise ship terminal near the Centraal Station and out into Gouwzee Bay. To get to Volendam, we had to pass through the first of many locks our ship would encounter. Note how close the ship gets to the side of the lock! River ships (and other water-going craft) cruising the Netherlands have to time their passage through the locks to coincide with the tidal changes. Another river cruise ship was already on the left side of the lock, so our captain had to maneuver the Viking Europe alongside it.
