Sailing the Lower Yangtze River on the Silver Shadow

One last look at the Yangtze River in China as the Silver Shadow sails downstream to the East China Sea. This magnificent bridge is one of many we saw all along the Yangtze, from the upper Yangtze near Chongqing to the point where the river empties into the East China Sea. This bridge is the replacement for the famous Nanjing Changjiang Daqiao, the Yangtze Bridge, which opened in 1968. It took 9,000 Chinese workers more than eight years to build the original bridge near Nanjing. This new bridge is over 13 miles long, which shows how wide the Yangtze is at this point.
