Nanjing, China - Ancient Walled Capital City of China

Nanjing has been populated for more than 5000 years. Nanjing was the capital of China from 403-221 BC and again during the Ming dynasty of the 15th century. It was during this time that a wall was built around Nanjing. When complete, the wall was over 19 miles long, with an average height of 39 feet. The workers took over two decades to construct the wall, and each brick is inscribed with the name of the brickmaker in case of defects. This huge wall had 13 gates that served as defensive ramparts and barracks. Several of the gates are still standing today. The one seen below is called the Zhonghua Gate.
