Northern Europe - Antwerp, Belgium

Another view of the wonderful interior of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp. The Church was constructed over 200 years (1352-1584), but little of the interior is original. A fire during the Middle Ages, the Calvinists, and the 18th century French occupation combined to destroy much of the church. The French soldiers even broke up the floor of the cathedral so that their horses would not slip on the marble. Most of the cathedral's masterpieces were plundered, but many have been returned. The Gothic interior is light but imposing, and the stained glass is especially impressive.
