French Polynesia - Marquesas Islands - Nuku Hiva - Anaho Bay

Anaho Bay on the northeast coast of Nuku Hiva island in the Marquesas of French Polynesia is a beautiful bay, surrounded by high peaks and ringed with white sandy beaches. What a perfect tropical paradise it is! Many Marquesans regard Anaho Bay as the most picturesque beach in all of the Marquesas. The Aranui anchored in Anaho Bay on a Sunday, but unfortunately we had intermittent tropical showers all day, which spoiled much of the snorkeling and sunbathing. The intrepid Aranui crew still brought all of the cooking gear ashore and prepared a barbeque lunch for us.

When it rained, it poured, and the wind howled through the palm trees. The only good thing about the wind was that it helped keep the dreaded nono bugs away. As usual, we all lathered up with mosquito repellant, and I did not hear of anyone who got any nono bites. We all shivered and wrapped up in towels or jackets. Even with the horrible weather, we did get a short time to enjoy the sandy beach, and some passengers did a hike across the mountain to see what was on the other side. It was the worst day for weather on our entire cruise, and as we sailed away from Anaho Bay, the sun broke through and shone on the Pacific. Maybe it was just telling us to return someday.
