French Polynesia - Marquesas Islands - Nuku Hiva

The village of Taipivai on the island of Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas was the site of Herman Melville's novel, Typee, which was published in 1846. Melville arrived in Taipivai on the American whaler the Acushnet in 1842 and jumped ship while there.
