Cruise to Cuba

Cuba is so close yet so far away.  It is located just off the coast of Florida, but Americans have been forbidden to travel there since the Cold War.  However, a Canadian cruise company has found a "loophole" in these restrictions, and will start sailing from the Bahamas to Cuba in November 2000.

The passengers of the Cuba Cruise Company's ship M/V La Habana will be classified as guests of a Toronto-based nonprofit foundation, allowing them to fit the "humanitarian travel" clause in the restrictions.  The ship will run three- and four-night sailings.  Although the cruise is billed as non-political, there will be a shore excursion available to the Bay of Pigs, site of the unsuccessful United States invasion in 1963.
