A Grand Time on the Grand Princess
By:  Ken

We have taken 54 cruises since 1972. Six have been on Princess Cruises, the latest our second cruise aboard the magnificent Grand Princess.  We look for quality in our ships of choice, from top dining, service, and atmosphere. We are not prudes by any means, however, we have stayed clear of Carnival due to the reputation the line has received over the years, as well as other Miami based ships/lines.  Our love for specific ships was spent over two decades with a fine line no longer in service. I hope this will bring new passengers to Princess, beacaus if this specific line were around today, Princess would fit the bill.  The defunct line we loved so well was Home Lines. We sailed their fine ships from New York, to Bermuda, Bahamas, Caribbean, regardless of season, as well as from Port Everglades. Similarities between Home and Princess are in these areas: food, Italian and Continental, service - among the BEST at sea, and ships, just purely beautiful ships.

We have sailed on a lot of great lines, no longer around: Royal Viking, Royal Cruise, Exploration, Crown, Paquet French Cruises, French Line, Ocean Cruise Line - and many ships that are currently in service on fine lines today. Home Lines had a major presence in the North East. Any one that longs for the "special feel" and ambiance of Home Lines need only apply to Princess. They protect your travel agent, they offer great itineraries world wide, and they offer some of the best repeat passenger discounts for rebooking found in the business. We so fondly enjoyed our last Grand Princess cruise, that we booked a 10 day-er on the smaller OCEAN PRINCESS. Do try Princess if you have not done so as yet. You will be impressed.

Princess offers "Personal Choice" dining on the larger of its ships, and we only can say that as tempting as this option is, we did not take advantage of it, we enjoy the main dining room, set dining staff and the formality it provides. However, the alternate choice is not at all obtrusive, and for many, it is well deserved, since it allows several options for meals, especially at night. Nobody is pressured or made to feel they must use "Personal Choice" for any reason. In fact, cruise lovers that wish to dress down, Princess calls this "smart casual" at night, can enjoy the entire ship experience, the great food, service, ports and all of the trappings, and NOT feel uncomfortable in their choice of evening attire, BUT BE AWARE, this does not mean shorts, tank tops, beer tee's and bathing suits at night.

I hope this sort of "review" helps a lot of you out in decision making. I hope some old Home Line cruise veterans are looking as well. Incidentallly, I am 52, not 99 years old! We took this last cruise with nine friends, and family members, including our 18 year old son, 87 year mother in law, and friends that had never seen the ocean, a palm tree nor had one of them ever flown in a plane before! So, as it is said, there is a cruise for everyone, and Princess seems to suit us just fine. We are all on the Ocean Princess for the 10 day noted above!

Good cruising,
Ken
