Western Caribbean Cruise on the Century
By: Wesley
Did I miss something while cruising the highly rated CENTURY to the Western Caribbean Aug 19-26? I could swear the dining room service was better on the MONARCH I sailed on in Aug 99. My cabin (5005) wasn't that much roomier than the cabin (2082) I had on the MONARCH. While the storage space was ample the bathroom was just about the same size. The port hole window was useless due to the fact it was recessed so far into the ship's outer hull. It was as if I were in an inside cabin!
The little details of the ship's construction made the difference between a passenger-friendly ship and annoying inconveniences made that much more intolerable. As pristine and well manicured as the CENTURY is, the layout of the MONARCH was much more functional for the Caribbean cruiser. The two story dining room of the CENTURY with its aft location was just as much a curse due to vibration as it was stately in appearance. The CENTURY is not a bad ship at all with its well appointed interior design and decorations. It may just mean that there's more to successful ship design and function than using the most expensive-looking materials and furnishings.
While I did enjoy only my second cruise, I have become more aware of the of "the ship" to the overall satisfaction of the cruise experience. Even though the atmosphere of the CENTURY exuded " Quality " for the most part, it in of itself didn't help in " Exceeding Expectations "!
