The year 2003 promises to be a big one for Costa, with two ships joining its fleet. The Costa Fortuna, a modified version of Carnival's Destiny class, is being built in Genoa, Italy, and will be Costa's largest cruise ship.

Costa Fortuna is being built by Fincantieri at Sestri Ponente yards in Genoa. Costa Fortuna, with her 105,000 gross tonnage, will be the largest cruise ship ever flying the Italian flag, and the largest passenger ship, in over 30 years, to be built by the historic yards in Sestri Ponente after the fabulous transatlantic ship Michelangelo, inaugurated in 1965.

Costa's new flagship will be able to carry 3,400 passengers of which 2,720 in lower berths, and will be 272 meters in length and 38 in breadth; passenger cabins will be 1,359 of which 853 oceanview and 522 veranda cabins. Costa Fortuna will be dedicated to the legendary Italian liners that provided regular passenger services between Italy and the Americas, drawing inspiration from them in the design of her interiors and the names of some of her pubic areas.

Fincantieri has also been commissioned to build the sister ship Costa Magica, which is due for delivery in 2004. Update: The Costa Fortuna was launched in 2003, and sails the Mediterranean and South America.
