Panama - Panama Canal - Turkish Coal Freighter - The Gaillard Cut Widening Project
When I transited the Panama Canal by cruising through on a freighter, the authorities were widening the Gaillard Cut. Note the terraces on the sides of the hill. The Canal is plagued by mudslides and must be dredged constantly. Widening the Canal is a slow laborious process today. Think about the problems the builders had in the early 1900's when the Canal was built! They had to cut a ditch across the Continental divide.
