Amsterdam is a mecca for the counterculture of Europe. Hard drugs are definitely "out", but marijuana is definitely "in", especially in the coffee shops scattered throughout the city. If a pub advertises itself as a coffee shop, it will be selling marijuana. You can certainly smell the pot smoke as you wander by, especially on a beautiful day when the windows are open. A warning to tourists--never buy pot on the streets of Amsterdam. It is not considered safe. If you must try the marijuana, a coffee shop is your best bet. Some even have Internet access, and they all have coffee in addition to the pot. (We only wandered by and didn't even inhale.)
