Another picture of David. This statue is so amazing. Michelangelo used a solid block of marble for his sculpting. He did not carve or make a small model statue first, but believed that each block of marble had a "statue waiting to escape". All of his sculpture was done using this method. Can you imagine the genius it took? It is believed that he used himself as a model for the muscles, hands, feet, and other details of the statue. When you are analyzing this masterpiece, note how large the hands are. Michelangelo was able to get the muscle contractions of the arms and legs in a realistic manner.
