The Floriade is a once-a-decade horticultural event in the Netherlands. I attended the 2002 Floriade while on a river cruise on the Viking River Cruises ship the Viking Europe. The 2002 Floriade was held outside Amsterdam near the Schiphol Airport. The 2002 Floriade ran from April through October and cost about 70 million Euros to set up. After October 2002, the park became a recreation area for the 100,000 citizens of the nearby city of Haarlemmermeer. We only spent a couple of hours at the Floriade, and therefore got to see about a third of the park. We spent our time at the "on the Lake" section of the park. Most of these pictures are from that area. Although the next Floriade will not occur until 2012, the Netherlands has other wonderful spring flower gardens that attract millions of visitors each year.
