Off to France Tomorrow for Naming of New Viking Longships

By March 15, 2014

Follow me on:

I'll be traveling to Avignon, France tomorrow night for the naming ceremony of the latest "litter" of Viking Longships next Tuesday.

By the end of this year, Viking River Cruises will have 30 of these revolutionary new river vessels sailing the Great Rivers of Europe, each with the name of a Norse God. When Viking River Cruises announced the addition of six new ships to its fleet in 2012, ten new ones in 2013, and fourteen more in 2014, these Viking Longships became some of the most discussed river vessels of the past decade. Since the number of Longships has been mushrooming, I could almost say they have been multiplying like rabbits! It's certainly been impressive to see a cruise line grow so quickly, but yet so smoothly.

I'm very excited about spending two nights on the Rhone River on the Viking Longship Heimdal and then traveling to Bordeaux to experience an abbreviated version of Viking's new itinerary, "Chateaux, Rivers, & Wine" on the Longship Viking Forseti. I'll be reporting back on this fascinating adventure in the next few weeks.

My last Viking cruise (other than the 2013 christening in Amsterdam) was on the Longship Viking Njord in December 2012 on a "Danube Waltz" itinerary from Budapest to Passau. It was my first Christmas market cruise and first week-long cruise on a Longship, and I came away really impressed with the ship. I especially liked the new Aquavit Lounge and our veranda cabin, which featured a full-sized balcony and large bathroom with heated floor. The Viking Njord and the rest of these new Longships are certainly a great addition to the Viking fleet.
