Wine lovers will start salivating when they think about Bordeaux, the most important wine region of France.

Did you know you can visit Bordeaux on either an ocean-going or river cruise ship?

Small and mid-sized ocean-going ships sail up the Gironde River to the city of Bordeaux, and then guests can take bus tours of the wine region. While on a food and wine cruise on the Crystal Symphony, I loved seeing all of the grand chateaux of the wineries, and was surprised to see the rocky soil covered with vineyards. Our tour group disembarked the ship at Soulac-sur-Mer and rejoined the Crystal Symphony in the city of Bordeaux after driving through the region and stopping for a wine tasting. Learning about French wine making and the history of the Bordeaux wine region was an added plus.

I'll be back in Bordeaux next month with Viking River Cruises on a portion of their "Chateaux, Rivers, & Wine River Cruise". This new 8-day itinerary visits Bordeaux and other towns that have inspired the names of familiar French wines on the Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde Rivers. Should be a fascinating voyage.
