Stay in an Old Bordello - New York Hotel in Ketchikan

By December 28, 2013

Follow me on:

Most of the historic New York Hotel in Ketchikan has been a hotel since it was built in 1925.

Of course, when it was first opened, the hotel had 18 rooms and only one bathroom. It wasn't as big a problem as you might think since guests could only use the one giant claw-footed tub on Saturdays! The wooden hotel has been faithfully restored on the outside, but the number of rooms has shrunk (to accommodate baths in every room) and the owners have added modern amenities like WiFi. The New York Hotel is less than a half-block from Creek Street, and is within easy walking distance of the cruise ship pier and downtown Ketchikan.

The hotel has also expanded into another building across the street on the boardwalk pier at Thomas Basin. This old corrugated metal building was once a bordello. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but like the main hotel, the inside is quite nice. The red lights and the "sporting women" are gone, but the loft suites provide good views of the harbor, and you can tell your friends and family that you spent the night in a building that was once a bordello!
