Sailing the Mediterranean on the Nieuw Amsterdam

The Nieuw Amsterdam is Holland America Line's newest ship.

She was launched in the summer of 2010, and is similar to her sister ship the Eurodam.

I sailed across the Mediterranean from Venice to Barcelona on the Nieuw Amsterdam. This was a wonderful itinerary, with an overnight in both Venice and Barcelona, and ports of call in Dubrovnik, Corfu, Argostoli, Santorini, Sicily, Naples, Rome, and Livorno.

My mom traveled with me, and we loved the layout, cabin, dining venues, and the service on the ship. The Nieuw Amsterdam carries about 2,100 guests, but the ship seemed spacious and quiet, with touches of both classic ocean liners and contemporary cruise ships. She would be a great choice for couples or multi-generational cruises. The ship sails the Mediterranean from late spring through the fall, and winters in the Caribbean, sailing from Ft. Lauderdale.
