Europeans have long enjoyed traveling for vacations to the island of Madeira off the coast of Portugal. The weather is often compared to an eternal springtime.
Although Madeira is breathtakingly beautiful with spectacular views and something for everyone, two things lacking are flat land and sandy beaches. Even the airport is built on stilts and bridges. The Madeirans use terraces and bridges to compensate for the flat land and take the short trip to the neighboring island of Porto Santo to sit on sandy beaches. And, even though Madeira lacks sandy beaches, it makes up for it in wine.
